mercruiser not running right(1960's?)

ok i just got my boat running from the help of this site and now took it out on the water and no power i tried everthing not too sure if it the timing thats out or what it is. it will back fire when starting bit not running and the only way the boat will stay running is with the fast idel up

any ideas i dont know if it my fuel tank, (tank was completely empty had a hole in the bottem) it seems like it is pumping fuel


any help will be greatfull
