Can the old 1985 pump be replaced with a 3 or 4 wire pump of a 40 or 50 hp motor. I know you can buy the pump new and a conversion kit for the wwiring to convert the old non-wired 1985 pump. I am considering buying a couple of used pumps and other assorted parts for $80 as opposed to $400-$500 for new. Got the boat motor and trailer for free so trying to see how cheap I can get on the water for.

Might be cheaper to convert it to a pulse type pump and run premix.

I have some time before the boat restoration is done so I will have fun tinkering with the motor. Gonna do a compression test first. I have the wiring harnes for the 3 wire pump so I will convert it to that for now. Can't loose for $100 I got $1000 worth of parts, power packs, ignition coils, carburators, 3 wire VRO and a 4 wire VRO, starter etc...

Working on my neighbors outboard.
The original system SUCKED!!!
Just changed over to the regular fuel pump.
Now it runs GREAT.
Would cut out and stall and not accellerate and used a TON of gas.
Did the same to my dads 70 back in the early 80's when it was new.
Too many burnt motors.J

I may try that first. I have heard good and bad about the VRO. I will need to change the wiring harnes to convert to 3 wire pump. So before I change harness, I may just use VRO pump as feul pump and see what happens.

Good idea to use it as just a fuel pump and mix your fuel 50:1. Mtr will probably last longer.
