89 merc 7.5hp help

Hey guys new to the site, I just bought a 89 7.5hp mercury engine for my 14' jon boat. I bought it knowing that I would have to put a little bit of work into it, my question is it doesnt seem to want to go into reverse, the lever works and the prop will spin(by hand) but wont go under acceleration. Before I take it to a shop is there anything I can do. Thanks

Shift it into reverse when the motor isn't running, and spin the prop. Do you feel pressure? Or does it just spin freely? Drain the lower unit and rub some of it between two fingers (feel for metal shavings). It could be a good number of things, but this will be a good start.
