I have an old johnson 40hp electramatic outboard. My controls are evinrude selectric...(don't ask lol). What type of throttle cable do i need for the evinrude selectric control box? I guess the new cables don't come with the hardware on the cable ends huh?

The throttle cable doesn't know the difference between Johnson and Evinrude control boxes. If I remember correctly you will need a 400 series cable. Any dealer will have what you need, you will need to know the lenth of your old cable.
And yes, you will have to reuse your old ends.

You're welcome, remember to swap the cable ends from your old cable.

I also have a Johnson electramatic outboard.
I also have Evinrude selectric controls (I was worried when I put them together).
I also had to replace the throttle cable.

Anyway, piece of cake, it's an easy swap.

Ok good to hear fellas! I plan to hook her up this weekend. I am having some starting issues right now. Think I had the wrong solenoid. It will crank then when it starts running it dies within a second or two

The starter solenoid only allows the starter to engage. Once it has started it does not play a role.

You may have a fuel or carb problem.
When was the last time you cleaned the carbs?

I pulled the bowl off and it looked clean. It ran before the rewiring was done. Think I got some junky fuel or something. Thought I cleaned the carb good but ordered the rebuild kit just to be sure.

Rebuilding them never hurts.
Make sure you clean the high and low speed jets. I used 30 gauge wire to gently floss everything out.

Could i use pipe cleaners to clean those ports out? That carb is a pain to get to..lol I'm gonna do the carb and see what happens next. I've done so much work on this motor.

Re: Johnson evinrude cables

They are a bit of a pain to get to, but you want to solve your problem right?
Take them off the motor and do it right.

Some of the orifices are going to be too small for pipe cleaners.
Use the wire like I said...you'll be happy if you get that thing running.

Also make sure the gaskets on the float bowls are not old and stretched.
Mine were and they were blocking passageways.
