1989 merc 35 hp

I have a 1989 merc 35 hp removed powerhead to replace leaking base gasket.Now i have somehow got the shift mech all out of wack,i pulled lower unit to see if i could get it back that way no go now still same,also the long copper tube is it supose to stay in the lower unit i need help to get me goin please.

It only stays in reverse and hard to move shifter ,man what have i done i use to tear these things down left an right this one is gettin me
