Fuel gague not working

Hi

I have a bombard explorer db 550. The fuel gague has stopped working and I am looking for ideas to trouble shoot why.
When I turn the ignition on I get a response from the needle however it goes backwards to the stop! It was a perfectly good work ing gague so I have no idea why it does this. I have disconnected cleaned and reconnected all of the contacts and have had no joy. I am wondering if it could be the sensor in the Tank that has gone faulty?

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
