Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

By the way I didn't say what was wrong with the boat. When I purchased the boat last year it was my first boat and I didn't know that much about them. The guy said it had one soft spot in the floor and would be an easy repair, boy was he wrong. Now that I have it apart all the stringers are rotten and someone has
attempted to repair the transom before and its only 3/4'' thick.
Is there anyway to resize pics on photobucket

Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

Been busy cutting out everything now all that's left is the stringers and transom.
I will post pics of progress hopefully tomorrow, not at my PC right now.I am trying
to figure out how I'm going to cut out the stingers, the fiberglass is still for the mostpart
intact and I have took measurements.Any ideas. I have seen WOG's diagrams do want the stingers
touching the bottom of the hull or do I need to use spacers.Going on Camping trip this weekend
to West Point Lake so I guess I'll get back to it next week.

Removing the stringers can be done a couple different ways...

First, make sure you have your PPE [personal protective equipment]; respirator, eye protection, skin protection and Heavy Duty Gloves...

Tools you can use include, but are not limited to...an oscillating cut-off tool, a 4.5" grinder with cut-off wheels, a sawzall [you can use a piece of sheet metal on the opposite side of where the sawzall blade comes through to keep it from cutting into the hull]...

When replacing the stringers it is recommended to keep them off of the hull by using some 1/8-1/4" spacers and filling thegap with PB...

Hey everyone I have a question about these humps in between my stringers. do I cut them out or leave them there.
When I go back with new stringers it will be easier to glass them in if they are not there but I dont want to remove them if they are important. Here are some pics.

Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

Hey everyone, Been searching everywhere for Arauco Plywood. Finally find some at a Lowe's 50 miles away, get there and they said it was a no stock item that was still showing in there inventory. So that was a wasted trip, although I did stop by a local Bass Pro Shop while I was there. It doesn't look like I am going to find any Arauco but I want a good grade Ply. Marine is realExpensive and I dont really have it in my budget.Any suggestions on an alternative Ply? I already have 10 gal. of polly,10 yrds csm, 10 yrds 1708, 5 qts. cabosil, chopped fiber all I need to move on is the ply.

Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

I think some of the guys here have used reg ext grade ply. Also the plywood that the sign shops use I think it was called MOD or MDS I'm not quiet sure . The Arauco plant burnt down thats why it's out of stock.:(

I think I will go with BC plywood, from the research I have done its about half and half.As long as it is sealed good it should last 20 years or so right?

Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

Got everything cut out, time to start sanding with 36 grit or so I thought. When I was about done I noticed these flat humps in the boat had wood underneath and in the center of the hull there is one that runs the length of the hull that has wood in it. Do I need to replace these also or can I go over them with some glass and resin. I want to do it right but if it will be structurally sound without replacing it will save time and money.

Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

Is the wood rotten? Do some core samples with with a drill bit . If it's not bad I would leave them there. Careful don't drill thru the hull..

Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

yes the wood is rotten but they are not stringers. I guess since I've went this far I will cut them out and replace them. I know a lot of boats don't have them that I've seen but some do.

Those are Hull stiffiners. Necessary. If not wet...move on. If wet replace and glass em in. Do a better job than the Drunk Factory worker did!!!!!:D

Re: 84 TideCraft SunFire Restoration

Thanks Wood, nice to hear from you. Just came in from cutting all of them out. They were a bunch of 16'' to 18'' pieces of plywood. With them removed it will be easier to glass in the stringers, then I'll put them in last so it really helps me out in the end.
