After hitting a stump going very slow I noticed my motor making a strange noise when I throttled it up to full speed.
As I was putting the pontoon boat on the trailer I heard very loud noises coming from the engine. I bought the online manual for my motor, a 40HP Johnson outboard with a tag of J40ELCDE stamped on the ID plate. I have taken the lower unit apart and have found that the forward gear has three broken pieces. I have also have noticed that my gear has three ears on it as well as three on each side of the dog clutch instead of two as I have seen in other posts for this motor.

I need to identify the correct part number to order, for the forward gear and the gear that goes on the drive shaft, so I get the right part.

I am attaching a picture of the forward gear for reference.

Re: Identify part number of forward gear

From what I am seeing, the forward gear and pinion gear come as a pair. BRP number 433570. They are pricey, see if you can get a deal on fleabay.
