I have a Mercury Classic 40 Oil Injected motor with serial number OA731602. The closest info I found on the Internet is
HP=50, YEAR=1988, MODEL TYPE=ELPTO, CANADA START SER #=A730007
from http://www.maxrules.com/models/Merc_model_files/40-50.html

Does anyone know whether this is actully the HP and YEAR of my motor? I just think it doesn't make much sense to have a 50hp motor labelled as Classic 40.

Thanks for the help.

Re: year and hp of my Mercury Classic 40

Welcome to iboats.

Back in the mid 80's, Mercury transitioned from rating the hp at the powerhead, to rating the hp at the prop.

For example, what was sold as a 60 hp motor in say 1984, was labeled as a "Classic 60" on the cowling a few years later, and was labeled as 55 hp on the side of the leg.

It was the same motor that had been sold as a 60 hp, but under the new ratings, it was only a 55.

So, yours says "classic 40", so it should be a 35 hp, 1988.

This is a 2 cylinder motor, right?

Thanks roscoe.

The merina technician told me that the motor has four cylinders. The serial number sticker indicates that the motor was made in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

Ok, couldn't find a definitive answer from several charts, so I went to Mercurypartsexpress site and punched in your serial number.

It says your motor is model 1045412BC and 45 hp

My parts book lists model 1045412BC as an '88 model.

I have never seen one that said Classic 40 on it. Have seen and worked on the Classic 50

Thank you very much roscoe. Very appreciated.

I bought an used boat last year which comes with a 35hp 1996 Evinrude. It was way under power. I could never reach 15 km/h. With this rebuilt Classic 40, I'm able to get 25km/h before going WOT. So I believe it has at least 40hp, or more.
