Hello figured I'd start off by saying I am new to the forum:) I have what I believe to be a 1982 50 hp Mercury outboard SN: 5950527. The lower unit seems to slip/come out of gear around the mid range to wide open throttle. I am wondering what year and horse power engines have a lower unit that will match up with mine or if I should take a different route. I was told the issue could be due to a worn clutch "dog" Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks Marc.

Re: Mercury 50hp lower unit

Welcome aboard. zx6. Your prop can also cause symptoms like you describe if the hub is spun. Use a marker and draw line across the hub and prop, take it out and ride until you get the slipping. When you pull the boat out see if the mark is still lined up. If no, time for another prop. Might be cheaper than a lower unit. Hope this helps.

Thank you I will definitely try to test out the prop like you say, hopefully by Saturday and I will be sure to post the results.
