Found this very ideal boat while around town today- but he is asking me what I want to pay for it without a starting asking price. I haven't checked it out yet but am meeting up to do so this weekend. Depending on the condition, where should I start? I really have no idea. I'd like to keep it under 4-4500. Thanks for any input. I feel blind on this one.

Re: Hes asking me what I want to spend

we need more info....type of drive.....size.....more pics.

it looks clean.....but that is nothing....

it has also been stored out side.

4 is the target price on an 88.....so start lower.

things to check.......transom.....deck....

and weight of the boat.....if it is 200 lbs over.....it could be water logged

Do you know how to determine the coindition of the hull, mechanicals and electrics? If the boat and trailer are clean and in good general condition (and have ALL paperwork)... your target isn't far off the mark, contingent on a sea trial.

IMO, if the guy is looking for offers, the boat's been hanging around unsold for awhile. Don't be afraid to go low. I'd offer closer to $3K than $4K and be prepared to go a bit higher.

50 cents. He'll either laugh or throw you off the property. At least you have a starting point. And why would he ask how much you would pay if you haven't even looked at it? He may take less than you think. Don't forget you'll be looking at a 24 year old boat, no matter how pretty she is.

Is he willing to do a sea trial?

I'd agree with JoLin. Just based off the photos, $3k would be a reasonable place to start. NADA puts the low retail at about $4k.

It does looks like it's been well maintained. Cuddy looks clean and neat without any water stains. The red hull looks shiny and dark, and red gel fades and oxidizes so easy that it takes extra effort to keep it up like that. It looks like someone took good care of it and that's a good sign. Certainly worth a closer look.

How about asking him this: what offers have you received that you've turned down?

Then depending on his answer, you may know if it's even worth your time to go look at or not.
If he responds that he hasn't had any offers, as previously mentioned that this boat has been on CL since 4/13, then you'd have to really wonder why not if it's really as good and solid as he says.

If he really wants to just dance around a price and won't come up with some type of number, just move on.

Re: Hes asking me what I want to spend

When I sold boats, I NEVER asked "what do you want to pay?" because you just set yourself up for smartalecks like me. So, offer a buck. Put the ball back in the owner's court. NEVER agree or offer a price until you are satisfied with the boat - the WRONG boat at any price is never a bargain!! If you find stuff ( and you will), decide if the stuff is a deal-breaker for you.
Remember, the RIGHT price is what the boat is worth to YOU, not him! if you can't agree, then it's not the right boat.
