Manual Tilt Stuck

Ive got a 1989 evinrude 48 SPL with a manual tilt that doesn't really want to move too much either up or down. I discovered this after I drained the oil from lower unit or replace it. Just routine stuff before getting it in the water. I wanted to put the motor up a bit to make draining and replacing oil easier. Never had a problem before. It just doesn't seem to want tot move up or down too much. Any ideas?

Does this mtr have that lever on the stbd side of the stern bracket to raise and lower the mtr ??

Yes it does. It's stuck not either in the up or down position but in the middle. When I pull up on the lower unit I get an inch or two of play but that's about it.

Be sure that the throttle control is in forward or neutral. It sounds like the reverse latch is catching.

Hmm...not sure the throttle has much to do with it since its manual unless im really missing something. Since the lever on the strbrd side doesnt engage I'm thinking it's the cable, probably some snappage. If its more than that I'm screwed, they don't manufacture these parts any more!

Re: Manual Tilt Stuck

Sounds like you have the tilt assist built back in those years. Go to shop.evinrude.com. and look up your mtr. You'll find good diagrams and the prices.
