Hi I have a 76 mercury thunderbolt 850. The motor would start and go forward but not reverse. So I have took the lower unit out to check and was told to put the shifter in neutral so the prop could spin freely. Now that I have done that I can't seem to put the lower unit in because the shift link won't line up. So if any one can help me with a diagram or walk me through this it will be great. Thanks

If you know the LU is in neutral, was the boat in Neutral as well?

Did you have the reverse cam removed from the LU shift splines and if so, did you get it installed in the correct position?

What is your engine s/n?

Rock the throttle handle to line up the upper shift shaft with the lower shift shaft. Turn the flywheel to make sure the driveshaft splines align.

S/n 4539020

I got the LU in and tested it today but the reverse is still not working. I have put the lu and the control in neutral before installing it. Could it be something wrong with the lower unit gear? Thanks for the help.

Here is the parts list for your s/n:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/475.cfm

See item 48 under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (SERIAL GROUP #1) (PAGE 1)

If you are not familiar with this part, scroll down to item 48 and click on the picture to blow it up. If you had this off and it was not installed correctly on the splines, this could be your problem.
