I have a 1990 Johnson 225 hp outboard. I changed the water pump, because I thought there wasn't sufficient water flow out the top of the motor. When I inspected the old water pump, it still was flexible and no cracks or signs of wear. I put water ears on the motor and while it was running, I noticed water coming out between the lower unit and the mid section. Is this normal or do I have a problem leak.

Re: 1990 Johnson 225 water leak question

This is just the exhaust water leaking out rather than exiting the water exhaust ports. Check the torque specs for the L/U to midsection bolts. If they are torqued down properly, then you may have to re-open the seal and put in some waterproof gasket maker. I have had to do that on my old Merc before. Sometimes there are small imperfections in the housing where the P.O. has tried to pry them apart.
