Before starting my boat, I always put the gear shift into forward then back to neutral to prime the carb (this is per the instructions of the previous owner). In any case, when I do this the engine will not crank. After some investigation, I found that if I put the gear shift in reverse and back to neutral the engine will crank. I suspect I have a faulty neutral start switch; any and all advice is much appreciated.

You should have a throttle only button, or you pull the lever or something so you are using only the throttle while in neutral.
Post a picture of your Throttle/Shift control so we know what kind you have.
