how to remove lower unit on 73 johnson

I have all the bolts off of my 73 johnson 115. The lower unit dropped down about half an inch. my question is what is the best way to remove the shift rod?

If I remember correctly there is a bell crank under the carb, remove the bolt and small nut and split the bell crank.
