I have a 1977 25hp Johnson and the water bypass plate on the side of the foot has had many holes drilled in it. Is it supposed to have any holes at all? Also what is the purpose of this plate? Thanks. Mike R.

Bypass plate? If you're speaking of the long plate with 4 or five holes or so, located just above the cavitation plate and is attached with two screws, that is an alternative water intake.

Yes that's the one only mine has about 20 holes and I can see they aren't factory holes. Looks like someone drilled them. I take it that there are supposed to be only 4 or so holes. Will more holes cause a problem? Thanks Mike R.

Sorry, I've no idea if that's a help or a hindrance, but they don't belong there. However, it's possible that an abundance of holes there could result in a air pocket problem at the pump area. Check other engines in your class to see just how many holes should be there.
