model 25E76E. Problem, no water coming out of exhaust.Trying to drop lower unit to replace impeller. Do these two shift rod screws (I take it that is what they are) get totally taken out or just loosened? I loosened both but lower unit doesn't drop. Probably just needs a tap with a 2x4 but will ask first. Thanks for all replies.

You must remove the upper one completely, the bolt goes through a slot in the shift rod.

Assuming you already removed the other 5 bolts. All you need to do is loosen one of the bolts and pull it down

No problem, but the bolt has to come all the way out.

Impeller looks good (not to re-use but not torn apart). No key on the shaft. Just a small metal *** and a pile of grey dust on the bottom plate. I will assume that the grey dust is what used to be the key that has been ground up. ??? Impeller was evidently not spinning. Also, there is no slot for a key on the shaft. Is the *** something that the key would go over to keep it on?Whaat good is notch in impeller if there is no matching notch on shaft?

That impeller and hsg are shot. Get a new repair kit and the key comes with it. The impeller goes over the key to keep it on.

Is that *** on the shaft the thing that keeps the key in place because there is no notch to set the key into on the shaft. Will order rebuild kit w/ housing. Just want to understand shaft / key issue.

that pin is it...I think it's called an impeller pin and it's all that holds the impeller to the d/s

+1. That impeller is TOAST! You can get a new one right here at iboats for about $20. There should be a small stainless steel pin (a.k.a. "impeller key") that is set into the drive shaft. It may have worn away overtime in which case you'll need to replace it. Without that little pin the driveshaft cannot engage the impeller and your motor will not pump water. I would also give everything a good scrubbing down with some soapy water and/or acetone before you put it all back together again. Here are some link that can walk you through the job.

The pin is still there. I quess the new key sets over it. Strange there was no key to be found when I dis-assembled impeller housing. Thanks for replies. PS Great tutorial by Duckworths Mag. Here is the pin on the shaft. Is that all there is supposed to be to it or is it shaved off?

there is no key. get a manual and you will see. There is a horizontal hole in the driveshaft, in that hole goes a metal pin, that pin is what makes the impeller rotate with the drive shaft.
