I am resealing the lower unit on a 1996 Johnson 30HP J30ELEDE. I have it apart (first time on one of these) and there are 2 o-rings and a nylon washer that seal the shift rod. My question is how do you get the old washer and o-rings out and new ones in. Are there special tools or a trick that somebody has come up with?

here is the exploded view

I'm looking at items # 34,31,28 any input would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Well I finally got it, and it was not easy. It took me bending assorted picks and heating and burning out the nylon washer. getting them back in was not much easier. I would not change them again I would take a chance or vacuum test it before I just changed them. Maybe if they make a tool to remove and install it would have been different.

My advice when resealing the lower unit leave shift shaft seals/o-rings alone!
