I am looking at a Johnson FD-17 that needs work. Price is cheap and thought it would be a fun project to play with.
I don't know a lot about outboards and have a few questions.
How good were the Johnson FD-17 motors?
Are parts still easily available for them?
A friend of mine gave me the motor. He said it runs but always had problems getting it in gear? not sure what he means?
Are these models prone to any problems that I should look for?
Thanks guys

Re: Johnson FD-17 ....Question

1963 18hp?
With a little TLC those were good engines. If the compression is good and no water in the lower unit, you should be able to bring it back to life. You will be able to find most parts needed to repair the engine as long as you don't need major internal or lower unit parts. There are salvage yards that might be able to help with major parts if needed.

Re: Johnson FD-17 ....Question

The FD was one of the best motors ever built. Give it a complete tune up and don't cut no corners on it and you'll have a very reliable motor for a very long time
