Hello forum, this is my first post and hopefully I will be able to post some updates of how my summer project shapes out.

I have finally ventured into the world of boat owning and have bought a traditional British Yorkshire pebble fishing boat . The motor that has come with the baot is a 2 stroke 15hp Mariner. Fromthe engine serial number I have been told by a reliable service dealer that the motor is 1983 Yamaha but badged as a Mariner (sorry if wrong section but i ve gone with the badge on the motor when posting ). The motor pumps water strongly but I have no idea when it was last serviced so I am going to replace the impeller,lower plate, insertion cup and a few other bits.

My first hurdle is that when i drop the lower part of the engine the gear shift rod is clearly still connected as when i lower the bottom part of the motor the linkage pulls the shifter across from neutral into reverse. Do I dis-connect the linkage at the top end or midway where there appears to be an adjuster nut ?

Dave. aka Jellyworm.

Dave;

Here is the parts listing for your engine:

You can undo it at the adjusting nut but make sure you carefully mark the position of the adjuster as this controls the overall length of the shift shaft affecting your gear shifting.

Re: 1983 Mariner 15hp water impeller question.

Thanks Gerry, I have a service manual coming with the engine service kit so hopefully I ll have a better idea. From the parts drawing the top end of the linkage has a pin and clip, is that also a way of removing the shift linkage without altering the adjustment. I m saying, remove the pin and then drop the gearbox housing, main drive shaft and shift linkage all in one assembly ?

As you can probably tell this is my first foray into boat motors, I do have aircraft engineering as my trade but never played with anything water based before.

Thanks again for the advice so far.

Dave;

Yes, it will all come out together and save you an adjustment worry. Glad you got the manual.

Are you military or civil? I worked a few years for Bristow at Redhill and overseas.

Re: 1983 Mariner 15hp water impeller question.

Military aircraft , airframe fitting mainly, now I ve moved on to a different occupation but like to have the odd project to keep the mind active. I trained on British Aerospace aircraft, from Buccaneer , Hawk, Harrier, Tornado and a little bit of civil work on the early Airbus. Thankfully I don't get my hands dirty for a living now but it's nice to get the tools out now and then.

Since my last post the postman has just delivered, an impeller, insertion cup,garbox oil, gaskets and plate for pump service and a manual.......so looks like a busy weekend here .

I'll post how I get on after the weekend and add some pics of the boat refurb to theother board.

Regards,

Dave.

A quick update. Dropped the gear box end off the motor today.I stripped the water pump to find a perfect as new impeller and insertion cup. The previous owners looks to have been telling the truth by telling me he had only recently had the motor serviced. I dropped the gear box oil as well and that was nice and clean but replaced it anyway.
Top end just a fuel filter element and new plugs. Fired up second pull and running nice. Just the actual boat hull to sort now.

This is a lovely example of a Yorkshire pebble, based on the larger sized Yorkshire cobble.
Hopefully mine will be the same once finished.The boat above belongs to a born and bred North yorkshire chap and his beautiful little boat has been my envy for a long time. I missed out on a trip in her about 4 years ago, hopefully i will be able to re-pay the offer soon.

Mine at the moment is not endowed with the cuddy but will be .
