Mercruiser 170 Alternator conversion

I am buying an alternator conversion for the Mercruiser 170 I have. The voltage regulator burned out this past weekend. My question is what do I do about the stator wires. Do I just tape them off or do I have to remove the stator since I will no longer be using it. What happens to the current that will be produced by the stator even though I am not using it?. Thanks for any help I can get..

You can do either. My preference would be to pull the balance off the engine and remove the stator altogether. If you leave the stator on and tape off the wires, there will be no current. There will be a voltage present, but with no load, no current.

The only problem with leaving the stator in, is if a magnet on the pulley comes loose and catches on the stator (Yes, it does happen). Then you have loose pieces banging around until you take it apart and clean it out.
Trust me, those magnets do not come loose easily when you try to take them out after one is busted up and missing.
That pulley needs to be in balance.
