Fresh water sludge attack please HELP!!!!

our lake, Lake Whatcom up here in Washington state has a terrible green sludge that over time attaches itself to any part of the boat that is under the water line.

:mad: I mean it takes simple green and Gas to get it off and it still doesn't come off completely. i spent 700$ to get it cleaned and they got it off, but IT LEFT SUCH A SCRUBBED MESS THAT NEED SOME SERIOUS WAXING TO GET IT BACK TO SHINE.. of course i didn't have the cash or the time so now boating season is coming up and I have to get some answers.. I need a freekin serious wax job that i didn't pay for to make it look good again..


Is there is anything i can do? any product i can put on the boat without it eating the Gel coat away.. Or at least slow the sludge from building up..


this is such a serious issue i pray someone here has a golden Bullet so to speak. at least some advice..

this is a freshwater lake..

I'm not sure what to add.. but there must be away to at least slow the Grudge build up..

Welcome to iboats.

Frequent hull cleaning is the only real solution. If your boat is left in the water it will accumulate green and black slime.

How you tried toilet bowl cleaner? The stuff that eats mold and mildew away? Many find it helps clean the hull. I trailer my boat so it never gets the chance to accumulate.

Is the boat in question treated with any type of bottom paint at all? Sounds like it isn't....

I am not sure all i know is a payed extra for a nicer Glycote.. it looks painted.. i don't see many boats that aren't painted unless there Aluminum boats.

my boat is a 05 Regal 2400..

i feel like that's bad news you are going to give me.. man i can't believe there is nothing i can do .. seriously this is so angering..

Zed, I use Star Brite Boat Bottom Cleaner ocassionally and can vouch for it's ease of use and quick cleaning of the slime I get from running in the local rivers, but I'm pretty sure I'm not getting the accumulation you are.

yea, my boat does sit in a marine for a few weeks at a time.. we take it out to fill it with gas.. But yea, it sits in that dirty slimy marine...

just reading through i saw some cleaners names.. is it possible someone could make a cohesive list together.. if possible. I get the feeling every time we take it out for gas we should try and clean it it....


i just wish i new the best product.. i have a feeling I'll be buying a few products recommended by you guys and trying them all... it has to be done. 4 months of that crap take's the pros hours apron hours to get that **** off.

I use Zing on everything related to slime, calcium build-up, anything like that. Eats through a waterline like nobodies business. Its nasty stuff so make sure you wear some chemical gloves (like those big dishwashing gloves) and dont get it on your skin. When it reacts with the slime it puts off a really potent gas too so make sure your'e in a well ventilated area.

Edit: The bottle says you can dilute it but I use it full strength.

There is a bottom cleaner made by MaryKate. It smell like Muratic acid and very well might be. But it will clean the bottom. You cant put it on aluminum. You need to see if your bottom is painted. Not sure what your talking about. (I am not sure all i know is a payed extra for a nicer Glycote). Never heard of this.If your bottom is just gelcoat, you can clean it with a mixture of Tyd-bowl (blue) and peroxide at a 50/50 mix

I am thinking Glycote = Gylcote = Gelcoat.

If your lower hull is shinny and white like the upper hull, then it is not bottom painted.
Ablative Botton Hull Paint is functional, but not pretty enough to brag about, Often downright ugly.
But it is underwater and mostly not seen except at a distance while underway.
