I have a 1978 Evinrude 70 hp 70873C Outboard Motor. Part way down on the transom is a set screw. What is it for and what if I turned it? New to boating and at first thought it was the drain for lower unit oil. Started turning it out and then realized that it wasn't the drain and so I turned it back in to where I believe it was.
Any input is much appreciated.
Thank you:facepalm:

If you thought it was a drain for the lower unit (bottom of the lower unit), I would think it is somewhat further down than part way down the transom.

Just exactly where is this screw and what does it look like?

If that is a phillips head screw leave it alone; it has nothing to do with draining or changing the gear oil. Boobie or Joe can tell you what it exactly is.

That is a allen setscrew that keeps the lower driveshaft bearing in place. If you've loosened it, clean it and the related threads of the housing with lacquer thinner or acetone, then screw it back in until mit is flush with the housing... and be sure to coat its threads with Loc-Tite which will keep it there.

My reply, instead of recommending "lacquer or acetone" should have stated "lacquer thinner or acetone". I have since edited and corrected that statement. Sorry for the goof.
