Hi,

So I've just started reading through this forum, So I know these types of questions come up quite often.
My Dad has had an old Swizter v-hull boat in his garage for years that hasn't moved. Well I've finally convinced him to get it out and moving through the water once again.

On the back of this boat is a Mercury 1500 6-cylinder 2-stroke motor. This motor hasn't been run for roughly 25 years. Its been in a dry garage the whole time. It was originally parked because the steering was getting stiff, but we've already replaced the steering cable for that. So now we are getting ready to tackle the motor.

I'm not real familiar with 2-stroke motors (I restore 70s Honda motorcycles on the side, but they are all 4 stroke motors).

What can I expect? From the FAQs I see that a carb clean and rebuild is in order. Where is a good place to get gasket kits? Same for the fuel pump and water pump?

Any other recommendation for this motor specifically would be appreciated. I am really looking forward to getting this thing back in the water.

Thanks,

Dave

Will the flywheel spin?

Very good question. I'm not sure. I havent tired. I've been going under the assumption that the motor is free and can turn.
Its going to be a couple weekends before I can get there to start working on it, so I'm looking for what to expect when we start. For now I'm going with the assumption that it will spin.

Squirt a little 2 stroke into each cylinder just to loosen things up.Check spark and compression.

Agree with Aussie...pull the plugs and tilt the motor up to let the oil settle for a few days...I can imagine lots of things are stuck. Also replace impeller and upper and lower pump housings as well as replace gear oil. Some lithium grease on the starter spindle, too. You should be able to turn the flywheel by hand before attempting to crank it. Good Luck!

Sorry its taken so long to get the serial number.

The s/n is 3629523

I believe this means its a 1973 motor?
Based on this where is the best place to find parts for this motor and what can I expect to buy?

Thanks

Yes, it is a 1973.

Here is the parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/462.cfm

This is not a reccomendation for purchasing there, which you are free to do but it does give you the p/ns which you can use to search on the net.

You will see the carb kits under Carburetor, waterpump parts under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 1)
and fuel pump parts under FUEL PUMP AND FUEL LINE ASSEMBLY, depending on whether you have one or two pumps.
