About to go under.

200 yds from the ramp and temp goes 200+.
Poorly marked area, strange ramp, looked behind and saw I was kicking up mud.
Turned right around and went back.
So upset, I didn't even work on it today.
If it wern't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. :(

Guess I won't be complaining Tuesday of all the gas money I spent on the water over the weekend.

KaGee, I thought Rodney Dangerfield died. :p

Sorry about your 'event'. I'm not sure what might be going on. I've driven thru mud and sandbars many a time, even tearing off prop blades, but never had a cooling issue.

When you recover from the shock, I'd put the hose to your fitting and check the temperature of your primary supply line to the thermostat housing. If the temp feels ok and you can feel water running thru it, I would run the engine and see how the temp reacts. If it is ok then I'd say you have an impeller issue. Unlike muffs, the OMC fitting will deliver water to the engine even if the impeller is shot. If it is not ok then maybe you packed the passage ways full of muck or your impeller broke up and is blocking passage ways.

If the temp, when running the engine, is still high I'd pull the thermostat. You can pump the engine full of silt, so maybe forcing water water thru the engine without the thermostat will clear it.

Those are the only two things that are likely possibilities. Of course I'm assuming that the thermostat is working. That would be too big of a coincidence if it is not.

Keep me posted. It's kind of a one step at a time diagnosis.

Sorry I took so long to see your appeal, I just got back from a second trial voyage up the Columbia River. I didn't push the boat to any new limits but I went for endurance testing and it passed with flying colors. I was out for 5 hours and nothing flew apart.

There's a big muddy area out in front of my house... My brother in law got bogged into it (as about 100 people a year do)......he has a 3.0 stringer... his temp climbed to the red... He simply idled over to the channel .. eased the boat up on plane and came back a few minutes later cool as a cucumber... he's lived on this lake for 30+ years...

Yea, I'm aware of the process, I just wanted to vent so I wouldn't explode. :D

Boat US had a store right outside the ramp. I stopped and bought a therostat kit just in case... even thought my theromostat was new 2 years ago.

Impeller only has a couple of hours on it too.
Last time out temps were well within the normal range.

Thanks for listening... I'll update later.

To my surprise, there was no muck in the drive at all.

What caused it? Defective part. There have been several here on this board that have experienced the same thing this year.

Don't know about other's problems, but this was a GLM part.

Just got off the phone with them and they are going to replace it.

Sure glad for the "pee holes" that cool the ball gears. Made for a quick diagnosis without pulling hoses off etc..

Consulation if there is any, it took longer for the oil to drain than for me to remove the drive and pull the pump. Just think if it were one of those "Black Anchors" ;)

I feel you. I was out Sta and Sunday. The on the way back I was idling waiting on another boat and my temp shot up and steam came pouring out of the dog house. Scared the hell out of the kids. Shut down and got towed in. I have a closed cooling system but the impeller in the raw water pump was shot.. Easy job on the Volvo though. 4 bolts and it fell out in pieces. The engine never knocked, Antifreeze is still green and the oil looks good so I think I shut down in time. I ordered a new impeller and I will change the oil and hope for the best.

I didn't think you had to drain the oil KaGee. I thought you just put the top cap back on the upper housing, turned it upside down on the bench and knocked the whatchamacallit off the pump housing?

I do feel sorry for all those with the black anchors too. :p

In theory... you are prolly right, with my luck... I didn't want to chance oil all over the basement floor.

Picked up a new impeller from the local parts hoe.... I mean house. Got the OEM number.
I also ordered and received a new ESA module, and a Pertronix Ignitor and coil. Got everything installed and she fired right up with water streaming out the pee holes.

All I have to do is tighty up some wiring and she's ready for another run... I hope!
