Im cleaning up a 1979 Glastron Sea Fury cuddy, it had a 94 Johnson Ocean Runner on it that I sold and picked up a Honda 4 stoke... The notched transom is bowed out in the middle by 1/4 - 3/8 inch, the transom tested well and isnt rotton, is there something I can do to reinforce the transom (steel plate, transom knees, or even a lower mounted bracket for the new outboard) or do I need to worry about a major repair before I mount anything on the transom? the transom was solid when the Johnson was on, no flex in the transom. Thanks, Rick.

Re: bowed notched transom

Welcome to iboats

If you add a steel or aluminum plate to a transom .....it will not help. The strength of a transom is based on the whole unit and not just a piece.

Post a few pictures of what the issues are and how you tested it to see if it was bad.

Unless it was supposed to be a curved transom, I agree w/ Bob's question: how did you test transom?

If it didn't originally bow, I don't see how it could be now, unless there's a structural integrity problem, now or in the past.

Is there evidence that there were transom repairs done previously? Perhaps they incorrectly repaired it causing (or at least not removing or worse causing) the bow.

A good pix down on the transom showing the bow, would be very helpful, as well as shots of the exterior transom skin and if possible, a few shots of the interior transom skin.

Good luck w/ your project, and welcome to dry dock.

some of the glastrons had funny back ends.....

but as mentioned above.......the bow more than likely is not factory.

this means a previous repair or a problem....

i think we need pics on this one

Sounds like a bad transom to me.

Dig further and be sure.
