this is a 2 stroke saltwater series engine, mounted on a pontoon boat of the same year. I recently purchased it. 3 weeks ago on the lake I attempted to restart the engine and the switch turned or slipped a bit. I got this humming noise from the motor that I stopped by disconnecting a battery cable. I later tightened the switch and stopped the humming from reoccurring. On the water this week and the starter would not work. Just nothing, except the battery cables heated up and later cooled down. Had to be towed in. This boat had always just fired up with just a bump on the starter. Can anyone suggest a problem elimination path? The seller did say the battery was new, and it appears to be.

Hot battery cables means the battery cable connections are either dirty, loose, or both. And that means to check both ends of those cables. Looking is not a way of checking. Disconnect them, thoroughly clean (as in shiny bright) and then tighten securely.
