I have a 91' Bayliner Rendezvous, replacement seats are needed for all seating areas. What type of wood should be used and how thick ?

Preferably no wood. Many seats now use plastics or aluminum for the framework. If you must use wood because you are rebuilding the originals or recovering the side upholstery, use a marine grade plywood the same as what you have. It's probably 3/8" or 1/2".

Less wood = better though IMHO

Isn't that one of those deck boats? I thought the seating was molded fiberglass with seat pads. Anyhow, there is nothing wrong with using wood. Find yourself exterior grade plywood 1/2 to 3/4...that's a good sized boat so 3/4 is probably fine. Seal with epoxy (better than poly) and you're good to go. You can cover with glass and seal if you need the strength, but probably not necessary. If it were my boat I would use a combination of 1/2 and 3/4, glass and epoxy. Obssest is correct with less work = better, but that can get expensive and sealed wood would last a very long time.

i have built many a boat.....and many a boat seat.

standard exterior grade plywood..marine grade ply will gain you nothing...seal it with paint.....and then let the air get to it.....it will last 20 years.

but the best would be plastic

William, Some tips. Everything on a boat must be much stronger than it's landlubber equivalent. So if you were going to use nails fto assemble something at your house, use screws for that same item on a boat. If screws on land, bolts on a boat. Use heavier wood for boat parts.

BTW-I disagree about using paint. I recommend poly resin for sealing ALL sides of plywood for seats. The wood will be constantly exposed to moisture and never dry out. Paint will not hold up, IMHO. I always use dried out pressure treated plywood for seat bases, decks etc. I coat it on all sides with poly resin.
