1997 Evinrude, Various Questions

Good Morning All!

I have a 1997 Evinrude that was given to me but has some problems. I have not had this motor running or in the water yet. The model is: E50TLEVC (or UC, can't tell from the sticker).

The engine itself looks extremely clean so I am hopeful that it should run OK with a tune-up. The main thing I see right now would be how much the boat might shake/cavitate due to a bent "fin" (not sure of the correct term here) on the lower section of the motor. It is bent/curled sideways and the tip of it is broken off. I have included a couple pictures at the end to give you an idea. I know that the prop is in bad condition too but I have an additional one to replace that.

So I guess these would be my questions:
  1. How significant of a problem do you think this would be?
  2. Is there any way to possibly repair the bend?
  3. Is there any way to possibly repair the broken tip?
  4. To replace that would I need to replace the whole lower section?

Beyond that I also had two generic questions about the motor:
  1. Does anyone know where to get a manual for it?
  2. Currently the motor is setup with a seperate gas and oil lines. Is it possible to use this engine with just a single gas+oil mixed line? If so, how?

Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: 1996 Evinrude, Bent and Broken Fin

thats called a skeg. broken tip no big deal, the bend thats going cause it to be alittle harder to handle /steer. it can be bent back but you must be careful. its aluminum and can break. props not great seen much worse. you can by pass oil and just run pre-mix. because someone gave this to you put no money in until its running. leave prop and skeg alone for now fine for test purposes. get it running and then determine what needs to be done.start with clean good gas, check oil level in lower unit.how long since last on the water?

Your outboard is actually a 1997 E50TLEUC. I would replace the prop if it is not perfectly balanced it will cause vibrations Solas props sold here on iboats are good and not too expensive. You can get the skeg fixed but is not critical. Your outboard is wired for the system check gauge it is the 8 pin plug at the controls. The gauge monitors overheating, oil level, no oil and check engine and can be a stand alone or part of the tach. If the Oil Metering System (OMS) is functioning leave it hooked up it is a good reliable system. You can run 50:1 premix in the tank until your certain the oil pump and tank are functioning. If it isn't you can swap it over to premix system. The link I included as both fuel pumps for your outboard. You can order the service manaul and owners manual from Marine Engine too. Buy the OMC/BRP Manuals they will save you a lot of grief.

Before putting it in the water change the water pump impeller.

Re: 1996 Evinrude, Bent and Broken Fin

Thanks for the replies guys!

@stylesabu: Last time it was on the water is unknown (I know, not good!). It was a hand me down from a distant relative. If I had to guess it would be anywhere between 6-12 years. The boat itself is a big restore project which is relatively cheap. The engine though is another beast. As I said before, the inside is clean as could be, but I really need to hook up everything and see if it will turn over. As for the skeg (thanks for increasing my vocabulary!), do you have any suggestions as to a "safe" way for trying to bend it back?

@hidef: Thanks for clarifying that it is a 1997, I would have never guessed considering that sticker said 1996. The link you provided will def be helpful is any repairs need to be done. As for the oil system, I have never had a separate oil/gas system before (only premixed) so I was a little leery of running into further complications compared to the "idiot proof" premixed. However, I think it would be worth my time to make sure it is operational and get used to it. As for the water pump impeller, any specific reason why that would need to be replaced (just curious). I also did not see it on that link you provided so I will have to see where I can possibly find that.

Ok it's time for another question! I was trying to get the motor to turn over and it would not.

After doing a little bit of investigative work it seems like I am not getting a spark to the spark plugs. Therefore I would guess the problem is the coil pack (P/N 583740). So what I would like to know is if there is anything else I should check before replacing the pack?

Re: 1997 Evinrude, Various Questions

My library has (Clymer) repair manuals for outboard motors. Even if they did not, I could get them through ILL (inter-library loan). It might be worth checking to see... But since you have so much ahead of you, investing in a repair manual would be a good choice. There are links at the top of the page for repair manual purchase. Somewhere there is a thread (I think) over which manual is better (Clymer, SELOC, OMC, etc.).

The Clymer I'm looking at has a very extensive troubleshooting section.

Follow the steps in the CDI troubleshooting guide for your engine (Page 39) to see why you have no spark. Using the guide will save you money and time.

Thanks guys! Between the guide and repair manuals I should be all set. Might as well do it right the first time ;)
