Hello Im new to the forum. I recently picked up an 8hp evinrude (1990 2 stroke)for 100$. The engine looked reasonable for its age but was seized. I took a chance that the damage might be limited and the application of my own labour and several hundred dollars might result in a decent little motor. No such luck! Teardown revealed water intrusion and a damaged beyond repair crank and rods. Amazingly the bores and pistons are fine showing no rust or signs of seizing. this despite the fact the impeller was trashed(and likely the original!).The lower unit oil also looked like it had never been changed but was free of water. the detent shifter balls were badly worn however the gears and bearings seem ok. I have decided that I will forge ahead with resurrecting the little sucker but only if I can locate 2nd hand rods in good condition. My question is if anybody on the forum can tell me if the steel rods on this engine can be replaced with the earlier forged aluminum items on the 6 or 8hp pre 90 motors without modification or problems(i.e. balance or clearance to piston or crankcase)I don't mind paying 200 dollars for a new crank but Ill be damned if Ill pay 400+for a couple of tiny con rods!Im also wondering if people know an alternative or source for the centre main inserts and needles as Im told they are "unavailable" Thanks Guys, Tony

Re: rod question

Look in the "Top Secret File" at the top of the page, there is a list of salvage yards there that might be able to help you out.
