I have a 2005 mercury 50. I am a new boat owner. Here are my symptoms the boat will never start without the throttle in nuetral and throttle applied no matter how warm it is. It runs fine out in the open water it also idles fine after I start it and let it warm up a few minutes (such as when first getting it in the water at the dock and then heading out). When im done fishing I pump the bulb up and then run back toward the docks when I hit the no wake area it gets me almost to the docks and then dies, which can be fairly frustrating. I then have to get it back to nuetral advance the throttle (sometimes pump the bulb back up) and get it running while the dock/shoreline gets ever so closer. I had a buddy keep pumping the bulb while in the no wake area once and it idled great the whole time. I would really appreciate any help.

I was going to put the bulb line into a portable gas tank and see if that would make a difference but didn't know if that would rule out anything or not.

If pumping the bulb keeps her running it's a good sign the fuel pump needs a re-build. Cheap enough to do and if it doesn't help at least it's checked off the list. After that check the fuel line for air leaks although I feel it's the fuel pump - try that for starters.

Welcome aboard, CS, enjoy your stay and have fun.

Thanks a ton GA boater. That is what I was leaning toward but I really don't know anything about these boat motors yet.

Well I took it out today and the boat was running great. It idled fine out of the wake area and started up all three times I tried. I was heading across the lake and it was running smooth as silk and then suddenly bogged down to almost nothing. It wouldn't get above 2500 rpm. I trolled back to dock and it started back up fine in nuetral it will run right up to whatever rpm I will let it. When I put it gear same thing nothing above about 2500 to 2800 rpm. I ordered a fuel pump rebuild kit just wondering if maybe a high speed stator or something? Please tell me it was just more of my fuel pump crapping out.

You got a new problem...you have a fuel problem as you should not lose prime once you prime it...with that being said you need to test the stator with a digital volt meter along with a peak voltage adapter...Instructions available for CDI web site for spec's... You need to rebuilt the fuel pump to rule that out but you definitely have a fuel problem...
