I have an issue with my 1997 Mercury it's a 40 HP 2 stroke 4 cylinder. Model 40ELO Ser# 0G483208.
I have a small current drain "3.2ma" I have isolated it to the Rectifier/Regulator. When I disconnect the red wires on the rectifier the problem stops. The rectifier has 2 yellow, 2 red and 1 gray wire. Is this a problem or is it normal?

Re: Electrical problem "small current drain"

Hopefully someone will chime in here. The grey wire is the Tach wire and can be moved to the switch box but you will need to know the right terminal or you risk a $300 part. Try removing the grey wire and see if that kills the drain.

Re: Electrical problem "small current drain"

100% normal...below is from CDI troubleshooting.
INSTALLATION NOTE: These regulator/rectifiers will cause a small spark when you reconnect the battery and will draw a
very small amount of current from the battery (Less than 0.001 amp).

The tach will not attach to anything but the grey wire on rectifier on your motor....
