My neighbor was talking to me about selling his boat or if waited a season or 2 he would give me the boat hes older guy and just rather sail i gusse. so my question was how much would it cost for upkeep for a 24' bayliner power boat. it has a 350 motor. every thing is newish every thing less then 10 years old and kept up with. trailers decent and every thing is running and good. what would a rough yearly upkeep bill for the boat. also what does a boat this big entitle for working on the boat?

Not speaking from experience here but if your neighbor kept it in good shape I would think upkeep shouldn't be to bad. It's always cheaper to keep up with a boat than to bring one back. As far as numbers I can't help you there.

yea he does every thing perfect on the boat put extra money just to have the best parts instead of cheap ones. i don't make crazy money so id could prob do one project a year on it like a big project. and i'm not worried about the gas price that much becasue it's such a big boat i could just relax on the boat and take it out once a week or once every other week after i save some money after working the week. Also i think i could save up during the summer and then go for one big trip a year on the boat

Do you have a place to store it? Figure a $1,000.00 per year for essentials like, registration, winterizing, de-winterizing and safety equipment replacement and insurance. No place to store it ? Figure 100.00 min per month (1200.00).

When I said not to horrible I was thinking around $1000 a year but didn't want to throw out numbers since I didn't know that well. I haven't gotten to the maintaining a boat stage yet myself. Still in the bring it back stage. Doesn't really matter if the were directed at me I was mostly wondering if my thinking was flawed as I am still pretty new here and I don't want to be putting bad info out there.

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

it starts off bad and then gets worse. Remember it's a 15 year old asking, not an adult with English as a second language.

wants to keep a 24' boat in the back yard; can't afford gas so doesn't plan to use it much, old "free" saltwater bayliner, no money for repairs, maintenance or upkeep, no skills or experience. Well, no good experience.

"what does a boat this big entitle for working on the boat?" To answer a question with a question: just what are you asking?

Costs you can look up when you should be doing your homework: Annual boat license fees, annual trailer license fees, insurance for trailer, insurance for boat, local personal property taxes for trailer, and for boat. I'm guessing $1200 right there. Got it on the hip?

Does your ramp charge a fee? And even if you go slow, a few gallons an hour at $4 /gallon is some juice.

Does your city/HOA allow big honking old boats to be stored in the back yard? Blue tarp? You wouldn't be if you were my neighbor and I'm pretty tolerant especially as to boats.

I'm no expert, but i'm pretty sure the bigger the boat, the more $$$$$$ it cost for everything you need to own and operate it legally. I also believe liability/responsability issues $$$$ increase w larger craft because more passengers are usually aboard and big boats can cause more damage in collisions or worse. You will also need a real tow vehicle for that boat $$$$$ I think realistically you should look at something smaller. Besides if you get this boat you'll have to change your screename ;)

I don't think this has been mentioned yet. Do you have a tow vehicle to pull the boat with?

IDK What the el' ur talking about You have boat Registration fee $60 a year Trailer reg fee $25 a year. im assuming its a double so probably more plus it might have to be titled same as the boat so add another 200 for titles on both then factor you need to upkeep the trailer as to a boat that big needs surge brakes. Then parts cause im sure closed cooling that need to be replaced and cleaned like impeller heat exchanger and manifolds and risers X2 on those being a V format that's about 1000 dollars every 5 yrs then you need gas about 50 dollars every day you need to do all the hard labor yourself or basic maintenance is gonna be expensive at a shop. If you do it all by yer self your gonna need a all the tools or you will never be out on the water. If you can since its sits right next you it shouldn't be a problem post a pic of it. and that should be a tell tale sign if it was upkeep-ed. And all in all you need a tow vehicle cause im sure your daddy wont wanna risk his car on YOUR boat plus your not old enough to drive let alone tow a boat. Last where the el' can i get neighbors like yours that wanna give away a 5000 dollar boat to a irresponsible 15yo.
just my .02 :facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

P.s. a boat that big needs insurance and B. your not old enough to own a boat how do you plan on going about that.

No you don't. You live to occasionally talk about them in barely legible internet forum posts. You've never properly completed a single project in the time you've been here. This, just like everything else you've ever posted about, will never happen. Everyone else, I wouldn't waste any further keystrokes on advising sbl. He's never taken a bit of advice offered here.

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

ok first of all there no yearly registration it's every other year and 20 bucks for it. Also my father already said he doesn't mind putting my boats in. And for some reason if he did my neibhor would be happy to help put it in. Also my neibhors so nice because i help with the boat every year working on them checking on them when hes away and go on the boats with him.
now about the comment about me never finishing any thing. well my sailboat trailer has a rebuilt axle that i finish. 2 patch jobs that are finished, a motor mount thats mounted right on the sailboat, o yea that's finished too. Lets start with the motor boat. New bunk, trailer axle redone. new deck thats works great for me, re wiring that's better then i expected, o yea a motor that i rebuilt/tuned up and that will be started up next week hopefully. should i keep going on with what i finished. and how its still working good to this day.
i'm just asking whats the rough cost of owning a 24' boat with a i/o. i'm looking to upgrade by the end of this year or begin of next.

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

Ok look up your info for a 24 FOOT boat on the Rhode island dmv its $60 A YEAR plus applicable taxes and the trailer MAY be able to do a 2yr reg for 20 bucks but thats if your lucky. That part i cant look up but i have to do it once a year.... Also your a young man your GOING to have doubters about what you can do i here it all the time. Being 18 almost 19 my parents have always doubted me but i now am going to be able to do what ever i want because i did Proved them wrong. Oh ryan you'll never get into college WRONG. Well enough about me. Just shut every one up by proving them wrong. Post pictures so they can belive that seems be something there always complaining about. its ok to ask questions but dont ask if your going to tell people there wrong any one here will tell you have to register your boat every YEAR. And the bigger they get the bigger the bill. here is the boat reg info to give you some evidence.

http://www.dem.ri.gov/programs/bpoladm/manserv/hfb/boating/boatfaq.htm

Effective January 1, 1999 Rhode Island began registering all boats on a biennial basis. Boat registration fees are as follows:

Length Biennial Fee
1-15 ft. $30.00
16-20 ft. $40.00
21-25 ft. $60.00
26-30 ft. $100.00
31-35 ft.* $200.00
36-40 ft.* $250.00
41-45 ft.* $300.00
46-50 ft.* $400.00
Over 50 ft.* $600.00

(*Boats greater than thirty feet (30') may, upon request, register at the rate of ? the biennial fee for one year.)
Note: If boat is transferred and currently registered in Rhode Island by the previous owner, then there is a $5.00 transfer fee per remaining registration year. There is also a $2.00 fee for duplicate decals if they were not attached to the boat or otherwise presented at the time of sale.

A boat registration year runs from March 1 through the last day of February of the following year.

edit so its is every 2yrs but still not 20 dollars

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

You can't even fix, maintain, and keep the one little power boat you already have running now... how are you going to afford just gasoline and insurance on an i/o 350? Not to mention everything else that goes with it.

btw, how's that 50 horse Johnson outboard running these days?... and how are the sheets on that sail boat holding up?

Maybe you should concentrate on doing a complete restore on just one of the boats you have now... so you'll actually have something that's seaworthy and you can afford to operate. You know, so you can have something nice instead of multiple piles of junk in the yard.
