I'd just throw a barrel under it, or back it into a lake and fire it up. You want to idle as slow as possible while checking head temp (shouldn't exceed 170 degrees or so). You should be able to touch the heads near the spark plug bases for a few seconds before it becomes uncomfortably warm to the touch. If it passes this test, you're good to go. If it's a new motor to you, or you know the impeller hasn't been changed out in several years, you may want to replace it for worry-free boating..
