Is switch from a Johnson 30hp to a Johnson 40hp with different controls possible?

Hi everyone! I'm hoping someone will have some advice for my husband and me. He has a 1977 Sea Nymph 161(that we just fixed up) with a '89 Johnson 30hp that's having some problems. The controls are integrated (not sure if this is the proper term) with the throttle and power in one handle. He wants to switch this motor out for a '93 Johnson 40hp that has a key start with 2 handle controls and we were wondering how difficult it would be to do. Would we have to switch the old 2 lever controls over with the 40h or can we somehow work it with the single controls? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You can go to the BRP website and compare part numbers between the two engines and see if they are the same.

Your single lever controls is compatible with the 40. They will hook right up to it.

Thanks for the quick response guys. One other question: the choke lever on the single handle control doesn't appear to mount anywhere on the 40hp motor. are we missing something?

Choke lever? Your single lever control should have a cable for the throttle, a cable for changing gears (FNR) And the power cable with the big red plug on the end. Pressing the ignition key in will activate the priming circuit on the 40. The lever on side of the control is fast idle advance when the engine is in neutral. Do the single lever controls look something like this?

Yes, that looks like the single controls we have. the priming circuit works but there's no way to throttle up the motor on the single lever controls to it let warm up for the 40hp. would it be easier to just switch the controls with the motor?

Do you cables installed correctly? It sounds like you have the gear selector cable hooked to throttle. The fast idle advance is integrated with the throttle if the throttle moves correctly the fast idle will move too.

I apologize for not mentioning before-- the single control you mentioned is correct, but the dual controls are fairly old. both controls were spliced for the motors, respectively, when we got them. right now, the 40h has the throttle and shifter cables running into it with the ignition just hanging by wires (and you have to press the key in 4 times to start.) the 30h has everything - the throttle and shifter cables and the ignition - housed in the single control casing. maybe need to do a little more research and get back to you.

The controls for the 30 will work with the 40. Should be a simple mater of unhooking the 30 and removing it and then bolting on the 40 and hook up the controls. The key and 2 lever controls that came with the 40 will work with the 30.

For the two lever control the small lever gear selector must be up and down for neutral. Moving the taller lever will then advance the idle. If I were you I would use the single lever control for the 40.

Well, he ended up moving the dual controls over with the 40hp to the other boat. We drilled a hole in the dash and attached the ignition and everything seems to be working fine. Only problem now is that he discovered the manual hydraulic tilt assist went out on it - stuck in the down position, very hard to lift up. He already tried to to fiddle with the connector cable. Looks pretty pricey for a new one :( Here are a couple of pics of the finished transfer. Thanks again for your help!
