Maybe a bad tach or probs with the gray wire going to it. How do you know it's charging ?? Also could have wires that go to the tach that power it up with probs. The new reg/rect's don't require the purple wire.

The purple wire provides 12 volts. Would this be the only 12 volt supply wire for the tach?

I'am thinking the tach needs a 12 volt jumper wire to operate.

tach doesnt care where it gets +12 as long as you dont use the grey wire which is for tach signal only. does seem weird that they would leave off the purple wire

The new type regulators without the purple wire are self energizing. The tach needs 12 volts, a grd and the gray wire to make it work.

With the key on you should have 12 volts on the purple wire with or without the engine running.

dam learn something everyday. i always thought the purple was hot due to the motor not the key. kinda makes sense now why you dont need the purple and why the gauges shut down when the motor does. sry for the bad advise
