Re: How to replace the coils on my 1972 johnson 6hp
look at the Top Secret Files..scroll down to Universal Magneto Troubleshooting...I'd suggest this first..allow the points to close on a piece of 400 or so grit sandpaper or emory cloth and pull it through so both contacts are sanded...do this a few times to clean the contact area... then wash this grit off with a little acetone or spray carb clean or electrical contact cleaner...reset the points, then check your spark with an open air gap spark checker set at 1/4"....a full magneto plate rebuild consist of replacing the points, condensers, coils, sparkplug wires, and terminal ends...unless the coils are cracked they rarely give problems...if this is your first time doing this, take pics before starting and mark the coil for the top cylinder < it's the one closest to the carb with the throttle handle in the start position >
