mercruiser 228 Gm 305 1982 hard to start hot

I ran my boat for about 30 min today. Pulled up on the bank and tried to restart but wouldn't turn fast enough to start. It fired right up when I first put it in.

What was your water temp before you shut it off? Is your bat fully charged?

battery was good. When I tried to start it sounded like it was trying to crank in gear. Sounded like chug........chug.....chug... then I let it sit for about 5 mins and tried again and it would spin slowly. When I got it home it fired right up.

water temp was at 140 f

the crankin' chug, chug may have been water in the cylinders.
Or could be bad starter bad connection or loose. Put wrenches on ALL battery connections!

Water could get in by several problems. exhaust shutter, manifolds risers etc. I would check voltage at the coil while cranking, a bad slave solenoid could could cause low voltage to the coil and no fire.

Well first make sure it is in fact whats happening! Easiest way is to duplicate the problem & be prepared to pull the spark plugs, then crank it to get rid of the water.
If it does infact happen, replace your water shutters. Their in the exhaust system, allow exhaust past them but won't let water from the other direction.
What style manifolds do you have? Log (long w/riser at the back), or center riser ( with riser in center).

If the shutters, they most likely are, the engine has to come to replace them. Don't break anything in that exhaust system, if ya can something that breaks it'll cost an arm & left ***!
