What are your small car MPG numbers?

This thread is in response to Boomyal's thread about the large car MPG. I'm wondering what vehicles you guys have and what your MPG ratings are.

For me, I have a 1997 Nissan pickup that gets about 22-23 city, and 27 highway.

I just purchased a 2012 Ford Fiesta SEL Sedan 5 speed which got 36.6mpg on the first tank and is showing about 39mpg for the second. This is mixed city/highway. Keep in mind this vehicle is not a hybrid.

Of course I have my scoot which gets 52mpg city on 10% ethanol fuel and 57mpg on 0% ethanol fuel.

My current car is not small. It is a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, well over 2 tons of SUV. I am getting 22-24 in mixed driving, nowhere near the advertised numbers.

Back in the 70s I had a Toyota Corolla SR5 that routinely delivered 36 and an Audi Fox that got 37. Both smaller, lighter cars than modern so called compacts.

Re: What are your small car MPG numbers?

You have to remember JB that now these little cars are turning in extremely high numbers with regards to safety. I mean my little Fiesta, that weighs 2400lbs soaking wet, was an IIHS top safety pick for frontal, side, rear collisions and roof strength. The entire car is made out of boron steel. I promise if I'd run my Fiesta in an offset impact against either your Corolla or Audi of that vintage I'd probably cut your car in half. My little car has like 7 airbags, some of them come with 10. Its incredible.

Cars are heavy because of all of the safety features in them. People don't realize the amount of engineering that goes into these little cars these days. Back in the 70s mpg was all that mattered. Now, safety comes first and then MPG.

Hello,
I have a 1995 Honda Civic DX, four door sedan, and get about 40 MPH to the gallon going down the interstate and about 33 going in town.

2007 Toyota Yaris with an automatic averaging 39 mpg w/o paying attention and mixed bag driving on the highway if I pay attention and do the speed limit I get about 44 mpg I have driven it hard and kept my foot into it and still got 35 mpg

I remember pretty well, WITF. I remember that you asked about MPG. I told you about MPG. If you want to knock 40 year old cars about safety then ask about safety. EDIT

This is exactly what we got, on our 06', also, on a road trip to MT, many parts 70-75MPH.

My response about safety was in response to yours about the weight of these "so called compacts." I just reminded you why they weigh more. It wasn't to derail the thread about safety, it was to explain the weight that YOU brought up.

Re: What are your small car MPG numbers?

O.K. so my tow vehicle and my small car are the same. It is still my F350 4x4 Off-Road 6.4l twin turbo diesel with an 8" lift and 35's. Just happened to look at it today after hauling a ton and a half of scrap lumber to the dump... 10.7... Funny thats the same as it was before the dump run. It may not get great fuel mileage but it gets great gas mileage. The same 1 gal can is in the tool box with the chain saw and I didn't burnt a drop all winter. I guess that would mean that I'm getting about 5800 miles to the gallon of gas then wouldn't it.

My 1995 Ford Escort LX (1.9l 4cyl w/5 spd manual) is getting 27-28 in city driving. I think it should do better, but it's better than 15 my 99 Montana gets in town, so I'll take it.

I think with a 93" wheelbase and a curb weight of 3090 lbs my '76 CJ7 qualifies as a small car. With the 6.5 V-8 and 4.88 gears it gets about 6 mpg around town and with a tail wind it will 8 MPG on the highway!

I have an '06 Mazda 3 hatchback with the 2.3L engine (nowadays the 3's come with a 2.5L). I get average of 30 MPG for mixed highway/traffic. This was both with the original engine and with a Jasper replacement engine. Conservative driving at highway speeds can get me closer to 35 MPG.

2012 Ford Fusion 3.0 V6 24MPG mixed driving. It's fast as hell so I can't complain. Our previous car, '09 Accord 4 cylinder didn't too that much better and was slow.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander (CRV / RAV4 type small SUV). 20 mpg around town, 30 mpg at 60, about 26-27 at 70 mph. I have a 'snapshot' mpg readout function on the dash and MPG drops off fast as speed rise. Aerodynamically, it's a brick.

(But, I get exactly double the mileage I got in my Dodge Ram 2500.)

Re: What are your small car MPG numbers?

All our numbers are 70/30 highway/city...........

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 12-15mpg depending upon how I tow.
2010 Vibe 32mpg (is this considered a smaller car?)
1993 Geo Metro 52mpg
1991 Geo Metro 41mpg (many performance mods)

Too many cars, but they all have their place.:)

Re: What are your small car MPG numbers?

I have a 2009 Mazda 6 which is not a small car (it has a great back seat and trunk space), but it is small in comparison to my other one - 2004 Suburban. it has the 2.5l 4 cyl with 6 speed manual trans - In my daily driving, which inlcudes a lot of rush hour traffic, I get about 27.5 MPG. On a road trip I will get 30.5 - 31 MPG if I keep in under 71 or 72 MPH - once I go above that it drops off.

This 6 speed manual is geared such that at 70 mph I will be at 3150 RPMS in 6th gear. I wish I could mess with the ratios as I consistently skip 5th gear and wish 6th could be more of an overdrive - but that is the price you pay for zoom, zoom.

My suburban on the other hand get 16mpg no matter what you are doing. On a long road trip I will see over 17, but not much more than that.

Re: What are your small car MPG numbers?

I was surprised to find the Chevy Malibu 4 cylinder gets 40 mpg per tank on the interstate and consistently gets 27 mpg per tank in town. 4 banger S-10 gets 22 to 26. Blazer 16 to 23, Jeep GC 15 to 21

Thats really weird as it showed up at the top and I was the first post in a year.. Don't want to be guilty of dragging up the past.
