Boat wont move forward or back! HELP

I have a 2000 evenrude 40hp. I have no forward or reverse. Prop will free spin with motor off whether its in forward, reverse or neutral. How do i troubleshoot this?

Has the lower unit been off?
Can you visually check the shift linkage to see if it is moving?
Any metal particles in the lower unit oil?

Disconnect the shift cable at the engine and move the lever on the engine manually. If it now goes into gear you have cable or control box issue. If it still doesn't shift, you have a linkage or lower unit issue.

The button on the throttle was malfunctioning. It was stuck down and not moving properly when pressed again. Guess i over reacted. thanks for the help guys
