Water in Oil...

I have an OMC 4.3L and I thought I had water in the oil because it's pretty milky looking. When I took off the oil filter it became clear that it is not water in the oil... it smells very strongly like gasoline.

What does it mean when there is gasoline in the engine oil?

Thanks.

I was having a problem last year with the exhaust hose spraying water and causing faulty combustion of fuel. I was smelling strong gas odors when trying to start the engine.

Could that unspent fuel have accumulated in the oil pan?
