I'm cleaning/rebuilding the carb of my Johnson '59 QD-20, and I'm stuck.

During dis-assembly of the float valve and seat, I didn't see how the little wire thingy goes in (it kind of popped out). Does the hinge pin go through the wire, or does the wire go around the float bracket, or does it just sit in there. I knew there was going to be something that was going to throw me for a loop, and it seems this is it.

Your inlet valve should have a groove at the other end of it that the spring wraps around. The other end goes over the flat metal piece that holds onto the float. The function is to make sure that when the motor is using up the gas and the float starts to drop down that the inlet valve does not get stuck. The spring in the configuration I explained, forces the inlet valve to open and let in the fuel.

The wire does not go around the hinge. If you do that, the float pin will not open and you will not get fuel. The wire should be parallel with the hinge pin and "float arm" should be between the wire and the head of the float pin/valve. See pic below.
