Hello Everyone!
I am new to this forum. I just bought a boat that I want to fix up. I have questions and need advice about how to go about doing certain things
I would like to paint it and get it all shiny and pretty. But I wasn't sure if painting it was the way to go.
It is a 1960 Montgomery Ward Sea King. Cute little boat and it suits me perfectly. I am working on a name for her, too.

Like I said, any advice on where to start is very much welcome!

You may want to try polishing before trying to paint. Unless you dont like the existing colors that gel coat may have some life in it and will be more durable than paint. Start with some maguires oxidation remover and see if it will shine up. if it is heavily oxidised get some p1500 wetsand paper. this will dedcrease the polishing time. good luck.

I agree with kmarine. That's a nice little set up and by using a nice compound like 3m & a good wool pad I think you can get it back to a real nice red & white. Good luck & enjoy your boat!

Thank you for the advice! I really appreciate it.
The red is pretty faded, there are some parts that do not have much color at all.
Someone said something about "gel"? Is that something I can do myself? Or is that something a professional needs to do?

I would try the buffing first. You'll be surprised at how the color comes back. There are several threads on oxidation that cover it better than I can explain. If that doesn't work there is wet sanding and then worst case redue it but go with the cheapest method first. Don't use a car buffer either. They are cheap and cant get the job done.
