1976 silverton prop shaft

prop shaft
after looseing the set bolt on the v drive flange how tightshould the shaft be?i was able too pull it back kind of easy i have heard it should be like and interference fit? IS this true?also the shaft is brass and the dimple for the set screw is kind of long gated can this be repaired at a prop shop?and help would be great thanks bcclew

The shaft would be bronze, not brass. When the shaft is unbolted from the V-drive gear box I'd say the easier it slides back and forth through the stuffing box and strut the better (as long as the stuffing box isn't leaking and the cutlass bearing isn't worn). Not sure what you mean about 'long gated' with the set screw dimple. - If you mean the the dimple that the set screw left in the shaft is elongated, unless it is really bad you shouldn't need to take it to a shop. Just make sure things are good and tight when you put them back together so they don't slip again (maybe a bit of Lok-tite on the set screw).
