Optimax Lower Unit Noise

Hello,

I am considering buying a 2001 Trophy with twin Opti 150's. When I started the engines out of the water with a garden hose attached, both motors were very quiet. However, the lower units were banging quite loudly. I am not familiar with Mercury engines. Is this a normal noise for Mercury outboards? It has stainless steal props but I don't think that should matter. The lower units make a lot of noise without the engines in gear and with the engines in gear but not as much. A mechanic at the dealer where I may buy the boat said that it is just the play in the lower unit. Once it is in the water and there is a load on the prop, you won't hear that noise. That doesn't make any sense other than I agree when it is in the water I won't hear the noise, because it is in the water.

I have a surefire way to know when a seller could be lying...their lips move:eek:

Having said that, it's OK to trust...but then verify. You should be given an opportunity to either bring another knowledgeable person with you to inspect it or to allow you to trailer it to someone for the work. At a minimum check compression, fuel system, cooling system and by all means look at the LU oil for shavings (an indication of excessive wear) and color (milkiness indicates water intrusion). NEVER buy a boat/motor without a sea trial.

Get the HIN and look up the PO...find out what he knows, why he sold it, etc.
