Side shift vs. tiller shift

Hello Everyone,

This is my first motor with tiller shift, a '01 25HP 2-stroke Merc on a 14' alu boat.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of a tiller shift mechanism?
I noticed from the service manual that the same engine comes with side shift as well.
Did any of those solutions failed so they provided the alternative, or is it just to accommodate user preference?
I would think that one would have more control with separate throttle and gear shift, but a single control "seems simpler" to use.

Thanks, Peter

Tiller shift is the best thing since sliced bread. My 1980 25hp is the best thing for fishing and picking up decoys.
But since you already bought it whats the point? The horse is already out of the barn.

Re: Side shift vs. tiller shift

Hi Mi duckdown,

Thanks for the comments!
My other observation is that the combined control seems a bit more complex than separate ones.
I also have a distrust of cable operated mechanisms, they seem to need adjustments all the time! However, the cables on this merc are quire short, so this could be different.
I just wanted to know what is the general consensus on these. As for myself, I guess I just have wait and see.

Thanks, Peter
