1990 omc cobra wont fully engage in forward

just pick this boat up its a 1990 modelfreedom 195 4 winns 4.3 omc with omc cobra old owner said there was a brass nut that needed tighting i havent removed out drive let but was planing on it i havent tired it running but when i kick it in forward all i get is a clicking sound when i turn prop by hand i kick it in reverse its fine could that so called brass nut have some thing to do with thanks

Well yes the one brass nut is used to set the cable adjustment, there is another that actually mounts the cable, the lower shift cable adjustment is critical. I would replace that old streched cable after I verified the drive does shift, remove the cable from the engine end and try push/pulling the cable to shift the drive, if the cable housing is broken at the drive you'll have problems even shifting by hand, you can tilt the drive full out and get a good look at the cable from underneath to see if the sheath is broken loose from the crimp end.

think i found the problem where the shift cable mounts in out drive under brass nut the threaded in holder for the cable was broke letting cable shift it in to reverse but slippin out going in forward cable moved fine in and out looks like easy fix hope boat shop has it tomorrow
