1999 Johnson 40hp water pump replacement

Good day all,

I dropped my lower unit today thinking that it would be easy to replace the water pump. I found out that I need to remove a nut behind the carbs that has a small cotter pin. I can see the nut and cotter pin. However, I am wondering if i can even get at it to loosen the bolt and remove the cotter pin. Any advice or tips on removing this bolt would be greatly appreciated. Also, how do I read the hours of use on this particular motor. Model # J40PLSSM
