What kind of boat did I buy??

I bought this boat off craigslist and it had no title. The guy had no idea what kind of boat it was. Im probably going to call the division of watercraft because it does have a hull ID, but I couldnt wait til they open again on Monday. Im interested about the capabilities of the boat and what HP its rated for. Any help would be appreciated..Let me know if you need more pics to help determine what it is..pics were to large to upload?

Sort of looks like a old glasstron but its crazy to buy a boat with no paperwork. Its called a yard planter.

IF you post the Hull number, the first few characters tell you the brand

Some states make it quite easy, others make it next to impossible.
Chances are you will have to contact the last legal owner. Hope they're still alive.

Depending on where you are at at it can be next to impossible to just get a title for a boat, the guy you bought it from never had it titled?

Not to mention it could be stolen and now it is in front of your house, I would start with the police and have them run the HIN, they can tell you if it is stolen and possibly what it comes up as ut ya, buting any motor vehicle without papers is a real crap shoot, if you can get a title it is going to be a major pain in the nether regions.

ok i think i only have the ohio registration number. Im going to have to call them Im sure. Unless theres a site where I can run these numbers myself?

The HIN is usually on the back of the hull - generally on the right side. SHould also be on that state registration decal

no HIN, just checked. the registration number is on both sides and on the decal..

Dued if you are in Ohio you will have a hell of a time getting a title for it. In the stste of Ohio it is illeagle to sell boat ,car,quad ,motor without title. I seen friends make this mistake.One friend did get a title for a quad. He had to get out of state inspection to see if stolen then pay for and schedule a hearing in front of a judge and plead his case and ask for the judge to force a title. Then it is all up to the Judge they do not have to do it. cost him like $300.00 bucks for the court pluse inspection at DMV

Looks like the original controls were cut off the hull (right side mid-ships is missing a chunk of the gunwale). That particular style of boat was made by a BUNCH of builders in the 70's and 80's. Right side should have had a helm right about where that cut is. Looks like there s a piece missing up in the bow too - right side under the foredeck is cut out.

The boat is possibly rated for a 50HP (some of them I've seen up around a 70HP), but I'd be concerned about the transom and stringers on that mug. Any soft spots on the floor?

Thanks for the replys. Ill make sure its not stolen. Good thing I only paid $150 bucks for it. I kinda knew there may be an issue with the price being that low. He needed it gone and I jumped on it.

Theres definitely interior damage with the helm being cut out. Ive built small boats before, so a little fiberglass work will not be a problem. No soft spots, but the transom does need a little work as well.

I've never owned a boat this big before, its 20ft. I figured it would be a good starter boat. My wife wants to tube, not very fast, and I want to fish..

She don't look like a 20 footer ... ya' sure 'bout that?

My 17' looks bigger than that one, and that trailer doesn't look like she'd take a 20 on.

I also am curios what kind of boat i have she is a 1978 i ran the mic number and it came back some name i never have heard of.my vin number is (see015440578) if any one knows what kind she is please let me know thanks guys

Do all your paper work and make sure that is in order before you drop a nickel into this thing, it does look like it could be a pretty decent boat but there is miles to go before you can run it so while you are waiting to get legal maybe start pricing things out and try to find your true cost to get this on the water and start with a good inspection of the hull to make sure it still has stringers and a transom.

Well heres another pic to give you an idea. My truck is at least 18ft, never measured it. But I have a 2 car garage and my truck wont fit-its too long.

If it's registered in a "title state" you will probably have a tough time getting legal ownership without the registered owner's signature. Here in Florida (title state) the exception to that is if a marina or mechanic acquires title though a lean. I recently boat a boat that way. You still came out ok, the trailer is worth more than $150.
